Aïwa
Born in the smouldering music cauldron of Rennes, French Iraqi brothers Wamid and Naufalle founded Aïwa in 1998 as “a gimmick with friends”. Their two ensuing albums and hundreds of live performances prove they are anything but. Jungle and electronic grooves overlap with Middle Eastern ornamentations, hip hop and styles that travel from Kingston to Baghdad, via New York. Setting: the smokey underground club La Maroquinerie was the stage for the Rennes band to showcase their latest album. After a bouncy if slightly disappointing concert (which featured guest rapper Jamalski) the two artists isolated themselves backstage for an impromptu interview. It was first broadcast by World Tracks, the weekly music programme by Radio France International.
